Forum regular JBo asked for insight and ideas about the future of our fair mountain town in Stimulus in Asheville—or—the opportunity to not shrink and die as a city. There have been a few good ideas floated in the thread, but mostly it has turned into a discussion of what’s not sustainable in the local economy, which isn’t a bad place to start.
National topics have been quite active this week. The ongoing discussion of the Stimulus Package has turned into more of a finger-pointing match about which political leaders got us into the mess in the first place. Was it Clinton in the Library with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act? Or Bush in the Conservatory with eight years of unchecked market speculation?
Meanwhile, in what’s sure to be an eventful thread, longtime poster Thomas38 presented the increasingly bipartisan argument for the U.S. getting out of one of our current wars in the thread Afghanistan “The Grave Yard of Empires”. And forum regular Seeker asked if we should be, you know, worried that Mexico’s political infrastructure appears to be falling apart at the seams.
Moving on to more general topics, this thread asks the burning question that’s on everyone’s mind in these troubled times: Who here still watches TV? The conclusion? Lots of people.
Over in the ever-active Music subforum, a very interesting discussion has started in the Post your favorite underrated band thread. Other still-active topics include the seemingly immortal What song is stuck on your head today? discussion—now on page 23 with nearly 350 replies—and the Local music coverage you’d like to see thread.
Smoking bars in Asheville has proven to be a popular new topic this week. Like to smoke while you drink, but don’t know where to go to do it? This is the thread to solve all your problems.
Techie issues have proven to be popular this week as well, with topics like tips for iMovie editing, Asheville’s Wikipedia page and alternatives programs to use instead of the recently exposed-as-vulnerable Adobe Reader.
Feel like helping out a frustrated parent? Check out Mr. Yuck’s thread on children who don’t sleep much, as it sounds like he could use all the advice he can get.
And finally, here’s a thread to answer that long-unanswered question we’ve all wondered about from time to time: Are Dogs Telepathic?

Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada who was instrumental in killing a permanent E-Verify system in the stimulus bill, that was to stop illegal hiring in the workplace, should be thrown out of Democratic office. Even when unemployment is paramount, he compulsively used his power to remove Americans and legal residents from getting work, so that corrupt big business could use cheap labor. He is obviously owes favors to , Casino’s, the corporate world and special interest lobby, usually for campaign contributions. Even Nevada n’s should recognize his traitorous move, although the national media have said little of nothing?
Follow this politicians trail, along with Janet Napolitano of homeland Security, Senator Gutierrez, Senator Edward Kennedy, Rep.Flake and many other Democrats who are pushing hard for immigration reform that will effect all working Americans. In states like California the ultimate recession has had a seering financial impact, because the overruling Democratic politicians have ignored the voice of the people. Now crippled by unemployment and an estimated 3.7 illegal aliens squatting the state, they are now forced to cut programs for the disabled, mentally handicapped and education, to name a few.
Laws to halt the influx of illegal immigrants have been manipulated, so they never reached the courts. Pro-illegal alien mayors like Antonio Villaraigosa in Los Angeles, Galvin Newsom of San Francisco have brought upon this state a 47 billion dollar budget crash, which now they expect the taxpayers to bail them out. Today no state Politician, Governor or elected official has any excuse for the billions of dollars of taxpayers money to support illegal immigrants pouring across our distressed border.
E-Verify comes up for a vote in March and should be made permanent, to halt illegal hiring. All perpetrators who do not use this cost effective, 99.6 percent success rate of the system, should go to prison. Immigration reform must start in the workplace, so illegal aliens are pinpointed and deported.
