The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners may have a (cardboard) pitchfork-wielding mob at its March 3 meeting, as the local activist group Republican Action Club will show up to emand a decrease in property taxes along with votes on a variety of issues. Also part of the protest: conservative activist Eric Gorny “dressed as Braveheart.”
According to a release from the Action Club, “We will speak during public comment … to demand a decrease in property taxes, a vote on zoning, a vote on District Elections, and accessible government. Bring your cardboard pitchforks and join us.”
With the defeat of then-Chair Nathan Ramsey, a Republican, in the 2008 elections, the board is now entirely Democratic.
Due to rules changes earlier this year, public comment is now at the end of the meeting instead of the beginning.
On the commissioners’ agenda will be getting information about the county’s options for expanding indigent health care or providing it at lower cost, a 54-acre conservation easement in the Reems Creek area and a request for rural-transportation grants.
The Board of Commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in room 204 of the Buncombe County Courthouse. Public comment will take place at the end of the meeting. A brief pre-meeting will begin at 4:15 p.m.
