Dripolator: The Dripolator will leave its food menus behind when it heads north to its new location next month. “The theme is taking what we do really well, which is espresso, and putting more focus on it,” owner Jay Weatherly says. That means no more tempeh reubens, pesto-egg plates or any other kitchen-made fare, although the café will continue to offer a selection of baked goods and cakes.
“It’s a big change, but folks are excited,” Weatherly says. “Folks are excited about that area; it’s another extension of downtown. It feels like we’re a piece of a bigger Five Points revival.”
The new Dripolator was slated to close its Biltmore Avenue shop this week, and reopen May 1 in the Pioneer Building on Broadway Avenue, abutting Greenlife Grocery.
“Honestly, I think a lot of our regulars live on the north side of town, so I’ve heard more folks than not say ‘Cool, you’re going to be on my side of town,’” Weatherly says.
While food is out at The Dripolator, the coffeehouse is planning to add beer and wine to its offerings. But Weatherly says coffee will remain the starring beverage.
“I’ve heard comments about ‘How many coffeehouses can you have?’” Weatherly says. “But there aren’t that many places that do it well. There’s room for more than one of those.”

Heinzelmannchen: Like most 5-year-olds celebrating a birthday, Heinzelmannchen Brewery in Sylva is breaking out the beer. Black Forest native Dieter Kuhn, who recalls fetching his family’s week’s supply of beer as a child in Heidelsheim, opened the brewery with his wife Sheryl Rudd in 2004. The brewery today produces five ales, one stout and two non-alcoholic brews, including a creamy root beer. To mark its anniversary on April 24, Heinzelmannchen is offering $6 growlers from April 19 to 25, and serving up samples of sodas, ales and food on April 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. To learn more, call 631-4466.
Square 1 Bistro: One of the best promotional gimmicks to surface this recession has been picked up by the folks at Square 1 Bistro, the bulwark of local food on Hendersonville’s Main Street. Throughout the month of April, one lucky table each night will have its meal comped. The lottery runs every night from 4 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 698-5598.
Sunny Point Cafe: Diners at Sunny Point Café on Apr. 22 will toast Mother Nature with local beer, the centerpiece of a special Earth Day dinner featuring Wedge brews and four courses of locally grown food. General manager Brigett Bolding writes that the dinner will “hopefully” include vegetables from the café‘s “first big spring harvest from (its) on-site garden.” According to Bolding, the dinner’s menu and price should soon be posted at www.sunnypointcafe.com.
