This weekend on a shoestring

Friday, April 23
• Curve Studios (6, 9 & 12 Riverside Dr., Asheville) kicks off a weekend-long spring open house with studio tours from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. (also 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday) followed by a Friday evening Twilight Party with a Mediterranean-themed feast, hand made chocolates, wine, Wedge beer and music. 5 p.m.

• Sultry singer/ssongwriter Lyndsay Wojcik plays to the happy hour/brewery touring crowd at French Broad Brewery (101 Fairview Rd., Asheville, 277-0222). 6 p.m., tips.

• Black Mountain’s Bayou Diesel is a long way from New Orleans, which makes them “the only working cajun/zydeco/Louisiana style dance band in the Asheville/Western North Carolina area.” They’ll bring a little Mardi Gras spirit to Highland Brewing (12 Old Charlotte Hwy., Asheville, 299-3370). 6 p.m., tips.

• The name of The John Douglas Company kind of sounds like a lumber yard, or a heavy machinery manufacturer. And that they’re sharing a bill with the Graveyard Trucking Company, well… But the local band is, indeed, a hard rocking group. They call their sound “mountain grunge,” which pretty much hits the nail on the head. Catch then at The New French Bar (12 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 225-6445), 8 p.m.

• Birmingham, Alabama-based bluesman Taylor Hollingsworth may have a baby face but he plays grungy old-beyond-his years songs with mean rhythms and meaner lyrics. He’ll be at Good Stuff Grocery (133 S. Main St., Marshall, 649-9711) at 8 p.m., free.

• Local world funk fusion band Makia Groove takes the stage at Hannah Flanagan’s (27 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 252-1922). 9 p.m.

• Soulful rock act Grant DaSantos & Fatback preforms at Wild Wing Cafe (161 Biltmore Avenue. Asheville, 253-3066). 10 p.m.

Saturday, April 24
• All Go West Festival takes place all day (noon-10 p.m.) in West Asheville behind the Rocket Club. The lineup includes Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band (pictured), Stephaniesid, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, Brushfire Stankgrass, RBTS WIN, The Archrivals (holding a CD release), Do It To Julia and more. Free.

• Local bluegrass collective County Farm makes the trip to the Feed & Seed (3715 Hendersonville Rd., Fletcher, 216-3492) for a 7 p.m. show. Free.

• San Francisco electronica act Ana Sia puts on a free show at the UNC-Asheville quad (1 University Heights, Asheville) with techno artist Eliot Lipp (pictured). 8 p.m.

• Metal band Shadow of the Destroyer puts in an appearance at Static Age (82-A North Lexington Ave., Asheville, 254-3232) as part of the Asheville FM benefit. Ventricles and Tent City Rollers also perform. 8:30 p.m.

• Singer/songwriter Scott Tyler plays for tips at The Root Bar (1410 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, 299-7597). 9 p.m.

• The Sports Zone (2310 Hendersonville Rd., Arden, 684-2646) celebrates the opening of its Tiki Bar, an outdoor area for cookouts and live music. The bar opens at 3 p.m. with a Gypsy band; The Sharkadelics play at 9:30 p.m.

• Singer/songwriter/Americana artist/super-nice guy Dave Desmelik puts on a full-band show at Westville Pub (777 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 225-9782). 9:30 p.m., $5.

• Gotta love a band who writes their own Shoestring blurb: “Asheville’s munks of funk The Secret B-Sides bring their message of love, dinosaurs and spaceships to MoDaddy’s (77 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, 258-1550) for the first time, with acid-jazz trio Hip Bones opening.” 9:30 p.m., $5.

    The guy from The John Douglas Company does the best Eddie Vedder I’ve heard since ‘Vs.’

    Seriously, he should drop his band and do weddings in Vegas.
