Study finds NC child care generates $1.7 billion in revenue and 49,600 jobs
Child care in North Carolina generates $1.7 billion in revenue annually and accounts for at least 49,600 jobs—more than real estate, nursing facilities, and chemical manufacturing—according to a study released by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development and The North Carolina Partnership for Children, Inc (NCPC). The report and new information about the economic impact of the child care industry in each county is available Thursday, Sept. 22, on www.SmartStart.org.

Series of free events shed light on adult ADHD for National ADHD awareness week
As a result of undiagnosed ADHD, millions of adults are struggling to manage today’s busy lifestyles, while experiencing problems with disorganization, money management, difficulty at work and in relationships. It is estimated that 85% of adults with ADHD are unrecognized, undiagnosed and untreated. ADHD is not just a diagnosis given to children anymore. Adult ADHD was first documented in the early 1990’s yet remains widely misunderstood and misdiagnosed. In recognition of National ADHD Awareness Week, the ADHD Center for Success and Coach Rudy Rodriguez will be hosting a series of free, interactive and informative events throughout the month of October.

Mountain Splendor 5K Race scheduled for Nov. 5
The inaugural Mountain Splendor 5K Race is a fundraising effort to be held at Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center. The Mountain Splendor 5K Race will take place on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 9:00 AM. The race will begin and end on the campus of the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center (BMNTC) at 932 Old US Highway 70. The entry fee is $15.00 if received by November 4th and $20.00 on race day.

Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care in South Asheville expands services, Airport Road location to close
Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care at 1833 Hendersonville Road is expanding its services and hours to better serve industrial and business patients. This expansion means that the Sisters of Mercy location on Airport Road, which primarily provided business and occupational health services, will close September 30.

Macon wins support for dialysis center in state appeal
Macon County has a loose agreement from DaVita, a publicly traded national company that operates the dialysis center in Sylva, to come into Franklin if the state gives the OK. The state limits health care competition to ensure hospitals and medical facilities are financially viable, issuing a “certificate of need” only if patient demand warrants it. In this case, the state said there wasn’t enough demand for a dialysis center in Macon County.

WNC high school students explore health careers during Oct. 11 conference
Some 500 high school students from across Western North Carolina will explore an array of career opportunities in the fields of health care, health education and more at the 12th annual Health Careers Education Awareness Conference, “Navigating Your Journey to a Health Career,” at UNC Asheville’s Wilma Sherrill Center on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011.
The day-long conference is organized by MAHEC’s Department of Health Careers & Diversity Education, UNC Asheville’s Career Center and the WNC Regional Advisory Committee, whose 28 members represent a range of educational and medical institutions.
