Asheville police are on the hunt for a murder suspect after an early-morning, Dec. 24, shooting left Anthony B. Carter dead outside a downtown bar.
Police say Devon Armond Gayles, 36, of 73 Junior Lane, Candler, shot Carter, 32, of Oak Park Road, once in the chest at about 2:20 a.m. after an argument in a bar on S.Market Street.
Carter was taken to Mission Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Police Lt. Wally Welch said police issued the murder warrants after “extensive interviews that extended throughout the night and into today.”
Gayles is a black male described as 5 feet 11 inches, 180 pounds, with a ‘pronounced set of gold teeth.’
He should be considered armed and dangerous, and police urged the public take no action if he is spotted, but to call police immediately.

ASHEVILLE – On Saturday, 12-24-11, at approx. 0219; Officers with the Asheville Police Department responded to the “Hole In Da Wall” Bar located at 44 S. Market St. in Downtown Asheville, in reference to a shooting.
The investigation revealed that the victim (Anthony Byron Carter, B/M, 10-20-79 with an address of 42 Oak Park Rd., Asheville, NC 28801) had been in an argument inside the bar with the listed suspect in this matter (Devon Armond Gayles, B/M, 11-07-75 of 73 Junior Ln., Candler, NC 28715) just prior to the shooting.
Anthony Carter died at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the chest. After extensive interviews that extended throughout the night and into today, warrants have been issued for Devon Gayles for 2nd Degree Murder. Mr. Gayles is described as approx. 5’11”, 180 lbs, with a pronounced set of gold teeth.
Anyone with any information as to Mr. Gayles whereabouts is urged to call 911 and provide authorities with the information necessary to arrest this armed and dangerous individual.
