Asheville, NC – For the 24th year, the Asheville Downtown Association will host Downtown After 5. The annual free concert series is held on Lexington Avenue, between Hiawassee Street and Interstate 240, on the third Friday of each month, May-September (May 18, June 15, July 29, August 17 and September 21). Local charitable organizations are once again invited to apply for one of the five available dates.
Any charitable organization with ties to Downtown Asheville is eligible to apply for a wristband grant. Chosen organizations agree to provide at least 26 individuals (over 18 years-old) to sell wristbands for $2 each to attendees at one of the five concerts. The groups split the revenues evenly with the ADA up to $2,000. In 2011, each of the five chosen charities received the maximum amount.
“Wristband grants are one of several ways the Asheville Downtown Association gives back to the community and highlights organizations that make a difference in our downtown,” said Lauri Nichols, chair of the ADA Events Committee. “We are fortunate to have a large pool of applicants each year, but it makes the selection very difficult.”
To apply, interested organizations should visit www.ashevilledowntown.org for an application. A description of charitable purpose and the group’s connection to Downtown Asheville is required. Applications are due by March 9. Asheville Design Center, Asheville GreenWorks, Asheville Grown Business Alliance, Homeward Bound and YWCA of Asheville were awarded grants last year. In the last five years, more than $50,000 has been given back to local charitable organizations.
