Glenda Weinert announces run for Buncombe County Commission chair

Childcare advocate and businesswoman Glenda Weinert announced Feb. 27 that she will run for chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. The Republican will contend with J.B. Howard in the May 8 primary to represent the party.

Weinert formerly owned Little Beaver Child Care Centers and is currently managing a home health care business. She also has a wealth of public service experience, including a position serving on the board of the Children’s Welfare League of Asheville.

Democrat incumbent David Gantt is facing a primary challenge from Milton Byrd.

The winner of both primaries will face off in the November general election.

Unlike the commissioner seats, which were changed by the N.C. General Assembly to be filled by district, the primary and general election for the board position will still be conducted countywide.

Local Childcare Advocate Runs For Buncombe County Commission Chair

Glenda Weinert will file for the office of Chairman of the Buncombe County Commission today at 9:00 a.m. at the Buncombe County Board of Elections. Mrs. Weinert has been a community leader on behalf of children, has served on a number of child care boards and was appointed to the North Carolina Childcare Commission by the Speaker of the House last year. Once past the primary, she will face current Chairman David Gantt. 

“Responsibility must come back to Buncombe County,” said Glenda Weinert. “Electing public officials with financial experience, both in business and in an educational background, is important during these trying economic times.” 

Glenda Weinert is the former owner of one of Buncombe County’s largest child care networks and currently manages a home health care business in the county. Mrs. Weinert also has an accounting degree and an MBA.
