Democrat JoAnn Morgan is jumping into the race for a seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners in District 2, which includes much of the eastern part of the county, from Fairview to Barnardsville.
Morgan served in Buncombe County as the assistant register of deeds under Otto DeBruhl for 32 years. She retired last year soon after the Democratic Party picked Drew Reisinger over her to serve out the rest of DeBruhl’s term. However, Morgan has remained active in the party, serving as the president of the Democratic Women of Buncombe County and serving on the board of the Democratic Women of North Carolina group. She’s also been active in a number of other civic groups such as MANNA FoodBank and the Kiwanis Club.
“I bring to the board some experience in public service,” says Morgan, who lives near Barnardsville. “I want to be a representative for the folks in this district who they feel they can call and have a contact who will voice some of their concerns. I’ve lived here all my life, and I’m very proud of my mountain heritage, and I would like to see that reflected on this board.”
The 71 year–old Morgan will face incumbent Carol Peterson and Black Mountain businesswoman Ellen Frost in the May 8 Democratic primary.
Republicans Mike Fryar and Christina Merrill are also vying for the district’s two seats.

As a resident of northern Buncombe County, I have filed today on the Democrat ticket seeking a seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, representing District 2.
During my 32 years of service with the Register of Deeds Office, I have worked closely with several boards of commission and I understand fully that now is a critical time for our county and more importantly, our people. During my time in the courthouse I had the opportunity to develop a deep appreciation and love for the people of this county, and at all times while I was entrusted with public office I made certain that I served all the people of Buncombe County.
Service has become second nature to me in working for the people of Buncombe County and as a county commissioner I will bring that same commitment and dedication. I am a native of Buncombe County and I am proud of my mountain heritage and ready to apply these mountain values as a commissioner to ensure that all the citizens of this county are provided with the best service possible.
