June 28 concert, silent auction benefit local man who has put on charity benefits since 2008
You might know Steven Liebenhaut as the friendly gray-haired cashier at Amazing Savings/Hopey & Co. He’s also a veteran benefit-concert organizer whose friends are holding a benefit for him in his time of need.
When he turned 50 in 2008, Liebenhaut began organizing food-charity benefit concerts on or near his birthday, raising thousands for local charities like Loving Food Resources, an Asheville-based nonprofit that provides food to local people living with HIV/AIDS, or in home hospice care. His first event alone raised over $5,000.
Now that Liebenhaut faces a cancer diagnosis, income loss, and mounting bills, his community is invited to give back to the giver.
The June 28 benefit concert at the Grey Eagle will include live music from Asheville band Mystery Cult, a performance from members of Bombs Away Cabaret, plus a silent auction with works from potter Lori Theriault of Crazy Green Studios and a $100 Hop Ice Cream gift certificate. Local talk radio personality Spycey Spyce emcees.

“The Eagle Flies” is a series of benefit concerts Steven Liebenhaut organized on or near his March birthday in order to raise funds for local charities, starting in 2008 and continuing through 2011. He raised $5,000 with the first event alone, and eventually started a production company, SteveNyou Presents.
