Quilts as Inspiration: New show at American Folk Art & Framing
Quilts and handiwork using fabrics have warmed our homes and hearts for centuries. Having been an artful and practical addition to our homes, now they serve as inspiration for the July 31 – August 25, 2014 show at American Folk Art & Framing in Downtown Asheville, with an opening reception Friday, August 1, 2014.
The hallmarks of great art always include line, color, patterns, texture, balance. Quilts are no exception; often they have served as the only artwork in Appalachian homes. Now the Artists of American Folk use these design elements & the idea of piecing, layering, re-using to explore their own mediums of paint, wood, and metal.
Liz Sullivan has traversed our regional landscapes for a lifetime and found inspiration in the patterns of fields and the adornments of barns. Darrell Loy Scott remembers a time when quilt stands were set up in neighbors’ yards, and Jane Wells Harrison creates jewelry with layers of tin pieced & riveted together, tiny little wearable complexities. Kent Ambler and Sherry Cook both construct quilt like forms with re-purposed wood; Sherry from old salvaged bead board; Kent using the wood blocks he first used to make his beautiful wood block prints.
Its going to be an exhibit to warm your hearts and remind you of the simplest of practical beauty … the quilt.
