Asheville’s first beer week is on the horizon. Coming on the tail of announcements that two big-deal craft breweries, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium, will be calling Asheville home, the timing couldn’t be any better.

Asheville Beer Week will take place Thursday, May 24 through Sunday, June 3. The 11-day beer celebration will crawl through myriad local restaurants, breweries and brew-loving hot spots, culminating on Saturday, June 2, with Asheville’s third Beer City Festival (though don’t forget about the LaZoom beer tour the very next day). More than 40 breweries are slated to appear at Beer City Festival.

Says the official announcement, released by the local beer-loving industry insiders who organized the event: “Our mission is to celebrate that nectar known as beer — to taste many different styles of beer and variations on those styles; to pair beer with a smorgasbord of delicious foods; to learn about and explore beer in all its delectable complexity; and, most of all, to have fun drinking beer in the brewery-centric mountains of Asheville, N.C.”

Sounds pretty good to us.

Beer Week will include seminars such as a speaking engagement featuring Greg Engert, a beer sommelier and writer for DCBeer.com. Tastings will take place at various venues around town, including the Thirsty Monk, recently featured in Garden & Gun magazine. There’s even a rootball championship at the Root Bar. And on the culinary side of things, various dinners will take place across town, including a beer-centric feast at Cúrate and a food-truck battle to end all food fights presented by the Blind Pig.

Keep an eye on Xpress in the coming weeks — we have plenty of coverage planned. In the meantime, to quote our intrepid beer reporter, Anne Fitten Glenn, sláinte
