The day after his Democratic opponent Brian Turner released a television ad criticizing him, Republican Rep. Tim Moffitt’s campaign sent out a press release announcing a critical advertisement of its own. The new Moffitt ad slams Turner’s family business for allegedly “laying off 68 Buncombe County workers — while at the same time accepting millions in government contracts,” according to the announcement.
UPDATE: Turner tells Xpress that Moffitt’s ad “misrepresents the facts.” Although the ad claims it’s a “fact” that “Turner’s company accepted $200 million in government contracts,” Turner says the amount of money paid to the company was actually “less than $4 million.” Turner also says that he was “not involved in the day-to-day operations” of the company at the time of the deal.

Moffitt releases new commercial highlighting job creation
Tim Moffitt released a new campaign ad last week contrasting his record of
building a business from scratch and creating jobs with the fact that his
opponent’s company laid of 68 Buncombe County workers — while at the same time
accepting millions in government contracts. The ad is currently running on
broadcast and cable.“My opponent and his family have profited handsomely off the backs of
hardworking taxpayers and military service members while eliminating Buncombe
County jobs,” said Representative Moffitt. “Buncombe County deserves better.
My dad taught me the value of hard work — and unlike my opponent, I built my own
business from the ground up.”The ad is backed up by a host of various news reports and federal agencies,
including US Fed News, USAspending.gov, WJHL CBS News Channel 11 in Johnson
City, TN, WGHP Fox Channel 8 News and WWAY Channel 3 News in Greensboro, Defense
Industry Daily, the Defense Logistics Agency, and the U.S. Department of Defense
Bulletins. According to these sources, in 2012, Mills Manufacturing Corp.
accepted over $200 million in government contracts while eliminating over a
third of their workforce toward the end of that year.Moffitt is running for re-election to the state house representing the 116th
District.
2 Things:
1). Moffitt is trying to hit Turner’s family for making parachutes for the US military?! Really?
2). Moffitt gets things wrong again (remember all of the BS from his last ad? http://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2014/09/20/boyle-column-obama-really-tank-economy/15909737/). – The two facts that he uses are in the wrong chronological order. The 1st fact, that Mills Manufacturing awarded gov’t contracts (to make parachutes, yay!), was from 12/24/12. The 2nd fact, that the company had to layoff employees, was from before the 1st, from 11/9/12
Like Moffitt’s laughable attempt at ‘news’ with the Raleigh Digest, he swings and misses yet again.
And STILL refuses to run on his own record. Imagine that.
So the amount of the contract was actually less than $4 million (to make friggin’ parachutes for the military!) and Turner wasn’t even involved in the day-to-day operations of the company at the time of the deal. Right.
Does Moffitt even check this stuff before it goes out?
