The Women’s Wellbeing and Development Foundation is partnering with the Hillcrest Resident Association to organize the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 16, 2011 from 11am to 3pm at the public field of the Hillcrest Residential Community at 100 Atkinson St., Asheville, NC.
Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The event will feature activities for children and adults, information, food, entertainment, and more. There will be live performances by the La’Ney African Dance Troupe, DJ Supaman, GPE, Stephan Bonitz, Jonathan Santos, Ekua Adisa, and Stephen Smith, in addition to an Open Mic. Activities include: an inflatable jumphouse, face painting, balloon twisting, water activities, and a basketball tournament.
The Women’s Wellbeing and Development Foundation (WWD-F), a local non-profit organi- zation, has been conducting its Healthy Living Program in Hillcrest for over a year. This project offers a variety of activities for community residents, including adult and children classes for cooking, fitness and yoga, herbal medicine and wellness, music and art, and empowering discussion groups to help participants make positive change in their lives.
