For weeks, Xpress has been updating you on Floating Action‘s forthcoming record and high-profile brushes with fame, even traveling with the band to Louisville last month for its appearance at Forecastle Music Festival (where the local five-piece was joined onstage by My Morning Jacket‘s Jim James).
Now, fans can finally see what all the (most recent) fuss is about. Floating Action’s latest LP, Fake Blood, is officially available for purchase. A limited run of 500 copies is available on vinyl while supplies last, in addition to CDs and digital downloads for purchase on iTunes and other online retailers. Locals, of course, can pick up a copy at Harvest Records, whose Harvest Recordings imprint co-released the album with Jim James’ Removador Recordings and Solutions.
Fans of the band will no doubt be pleased. Fake Blood picks up where Dessert Etiquette and Floating Action left off: yet another lo-fi, groove-heavy masterpiece of vintage soul rhythms and bright, surf rock licks by musical mastermind Seth Kauffman, who writes and records the entirety of the albums on his own. That said, there’s no succinct way to pin down the singular Seth Kauffman aesthetic, and the album runs the gamut of genres, with hints of Western country, reggae, gospel, garage rock, R&B and psychedelia. Basically, name a genre and it’s lurking somewhere beneath the surface.
Too impatient to wait for a trip to the record store? Get a taste of Fake Blood with Floating Action’s new video for “Not What I Came For,” complete with inexplicably French subtitles.

And just in case you thought Kauffman and James’ collaboration at Forecastle was a one-off, here’s a clip of the local multi-instrumentalist performing a cover of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity” with My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses in Raleigh last August:
