Singer-songwriter Kenny Roby is the former frontman of 6 String Drag, a roots-Americana band based in Raleigh. That group's '97 album, High Hat, was co-produced by none other than Steve Earle and contributed to the band's regional acclaim. After 6 String Drag called it quits, Roby went solo and released three of his own albums between '99 and '06. Roby's fourth full-length, Memories & Birds, has been receiving positive early reviews. One writeup concludes, "The quieter numbers in particular, like closer ‘Fading Fighter,’ feel bigger than themselves because Roby feels fully invested in his words for maybe the first time." Roby holds an album-release show at The Grey Eagle on Tuesday, April 2. 8 p.m., $10/$12. http://thegreyeagle.com. Photo by Sandlin Gaither. For a review of Memories & Birds, go to mountainx.com.
