Buncombe schools technical education director receives regional award

Asheville, NC – April 25, 2013 – Buncombe County Schools Career Technical Education Director Christy Cheek has been selected as the Career Technical Education Administrator of the Year for the Western Region by the NC Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators (CTE). Cheek was nominated and elected by the CTE administrators of the western region which includes 19 school districts: Asheville City, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey County Schools.

“Christy is one of the most compassionate and dedicated individuals in CTE that I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with,” said Career and Technical Regional Coordinator for the Western Region Wendy Edney. “She has been a shining example to all of us as to how to support and sustain quality CTE programs.”

Cheek serves on the state CTE advisory board, has served as the regional chairperson and is currently the President Elect for the state professional association, NC Association of Career and Technical Educators. She will be recognized with a plaque as the Western Region CTE Administrator of the Year at the CTE Summer Conference in Greensboro in July. She is now under consideration for the state administrator of the year award.

“I have the greatest job in our system,” said Cheek. “I get to work each day with the best teachers, students and community leaders who make Buncombe County and Asheville the best place to live. I believe that Career and Technical Education is for every student in our system and it is my passion that keeps me going each day. It is a privilege to be selected from our region, as all other CTE directors work as hard as I do to promote the exciting programs we all love!”
