“I grew up going to the market every week with my mother. Twice a week, we would go to the market. That’s where we would go do our food shopping. We would have to walk a good 15-20 minutes.
“We were a big family of six children, so that’s a lot of food. She had this thing on wheels — it’s like a big basket. Kind of like a box, but made out of basket material, on a set of four wheels, and you just push it and go to the market and do our thing.
“When I started doing the markets here, I immediately went back to that feeling. In France, at the markets, the vendors go, ‘Eh! Buy my beautiful da-da-das! They’re good!’ Everybody is like that. When I started the markets here my first year, here I am saying, ‘Hey! Try my good quiche and my soup and my ratatouille!’
“All the vendors start looking at me like, ‘What?’
“It’s different.
“Sometimes, they make fun of me and say, ‘I have soups and ratatouille!’”
