From a press release:
Downtown Waynesville goes to the dogs
Sarge’s 8th Annual Dog Walk is Aug. 3
Every year the streets of downtown Waynesville are taken over when hundreds of dogs and their owners show up for the Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation Downtown Waynesville Dog Walk
This year marks the 8th anniversary of the walk, and it promises to be a good time for everyone — whether on four legs or two.
“It is the biggest fundraiser of the year, which allows us to do our work all year long,” said Doyle Teague, Dog Walk coordinator. “It’s also a fun event for the community.”
The Dog Walk begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 in front of the Haywood County Courthouse on Main Street. For walkers who have not pre-registered, sign up begins at 9 a.m.
To participate, walkers must complete a registration form, which can be found on the Sarge’s website at www.sargeandfriends.org or the Sarge’s office at 256 Industrial Park Drive in Waynesville. Registration is $15 per dog, and event T-shirts are $15 each, or free with registration. Each walker also recieves a dog bandanna and goody bag for participating.
Last year’s walk raised $20,000 for Sarge’s, and Teague said the money is vital in supporting Sarge’s mission to rescue homeless dogs and cats in Haywood County. The fundraiser helps to offset the costs of medical supplies, boarding, transport and food for the hundreds of animals the organization finds homes for each year.
“This year, we are challenging our walkers to help Sarge’s more than ever by having their walk sponsored by family friends and businesses,” Teague said. “We will have prizes for the individual or team that raises the most money and the highest grossing individual or team, and for the first time, the winner will get to lead the parade and carry Sarge’s banner during the walk.”
After the walk, the fun continues with more competitions and prizes, where dogs and their owners can strut their stuff in the tail wagging competition, participate in the owner/dog look alike contest, show off in the best dressed competition, or exhibit their skills in the best trick contest.
Pre-registration will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 1 and 2 at the Sarge’s office.
“We encourage folks to pre-register and pick up thier shirts before the event so they can wear the shirt in the walk,” Teague said. “This event is not just a fundraiser it’s one of the most unique and fun events held in Waynesville each year. If you’ve never seen the streets filled with 200 dogs, it’s a sight to behold and you should come out and join us this year.”
