Our series with Sherwood’s Music — showcasing local musicians through stripped-down performances for the web — is returning for a limited run this summer. This week Valerie Meiss performs “Dumpsters & Divebars.”
Singer, songwriter, illustrator, puppetmaker and performance artist Valerie Meiss has been a regular feature in the Asheville art world for a solid decade, performing locally and touring nationally as Tiny Wonder, as well as one-half of Miss Mousie & The Rigamarole and a member of gothic-cabaret band Hellblinki.
In her artist bio, Meiss writes that “a fascination with fairytales and detective stories at bedtime, a never-ending stockpile of cardboard, and a slew of old junk and toy instruments have left their mark” on her work. Meiss’ career includes a tour with marionette masters Madison J. Cripps and Keith Shubert and the creation of some charming characters for original productions and DragonCon adventures. Her stage resume also features regular performances at The Magnetic Theatre, Asheville Vaudeville, Asheville Fringe Festival and The Wham, Bam! Puppet Slam.
“Space and Time,” which Meiss premiered at “The Moon Show” at The Odditorium in November 2014, “started as a song but ended as a thinly veiled recap of the most recent series of Doctor Who,” she says.
