Buncombe commissioner preview: health and mobility

At the Nov. 5 Buncombe County Board of Commissioners meeting, the board will tackle a rezoning, grants for the Mountain Mobility transportation program, and changing the rules for a local mental health authority.

Currently, the Smoky Mountain Center for Mental Health’s rules limit its board to 21 voting members. But due to the major changes in local mental health institutions, the newly consolidated center reaches 23 WNC counties, which means there are not enough voting members to represent each county. The resolution asks the board to reconsider the limit and allow the center to equally distribute its voting members throughout the counties it represents.

The board will also consider whether to grant local resident Anthony Case’s requested rezoning of his Emma property from residential to commercial. The rezoning has received approval from staff and the county planning board. The plot is adjacent to a commercial property.

The commissioners will also vote on $728,353 in funds for Mountain Mobility, among other matters

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in their chambers at 200 College St., in downtown Asheville.
