The candidates appointed by the commissioners during this afternoon’s Feb. 1 meeting have been updated in bold. We’ll have a detailed report on the session in the Feb. 9 issue of Xpress.
The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will kick off the month with what looks to be a short meeting. Topping the light Feb. 1 agenda, commissioners will consider appointing candidates to the Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission, the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee, the Civic Center Commission and the URTV Board.
Here’s the list of vacancies and applicants:
Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission (one vacancy)
Paul Smith (vote was 5-0)
Drake Fowler
Mychal Bacoate
Derek Weekley
Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee (four vacancies)
Sarah Oram (vote was 5-0)
Civic Center Commission (two vacancies)
Elizabeth Franks
Michael Fisher
Max Queen
• The commissioners acted to delay this appointment, with board Chair David Gantt explaining that they would like to “conduct interviews before making a decision.”
URTV Board (one vacancy)
Mychal Bacoate
Don Yelton
*Jerry Young
* Incumbent URTV Board President Jerry Young was not on the original list of candidates included in the meeting’s agenda. The commissioners voted 4-1 to suspend the county’s rules to allow Young to serve another term. Commissioner Holly Jones voted against suspending the rules. The board then voted 4-1 to reappoint Young to the URTV Board. Jones voted for Mychal Bacoate.
Commissioners will also consider an ordinance to update the language that governs the county’s Agricultural Advisory Board and its Farmland Preservation Program. The Agricultural Advisory Board voted unanimously in support of recommending the changes.
The board will meet at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the commissioner’s chambers, located at 30 Valley St. A short pre-meeting review of the agenda will begin at 4:15 p.m.
With all the gloomy news about our public access, they still appointed Jerry Young????? They want our public access to wither on the vine.
