CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University will offer a Certified Financial Planner certificate program beginning in March.
Students will take the yearlong program primarily online, but three face-to-face meetings at WCU’s instructional site at Biltmore Park Town Square in Asheville are required for each of the six courses. The online class will begin one week prior to the first scheduled face-to-face meeting.
Students are expected to spend at least 25 hours online per course. The course schedule is “Investment Planning,” March 19-May 7; “Introduction to Financial Planning and Risk Management,” May 14-July 2; “Income Tax Planning,” July 9-Aug. 27; “Retirement Planning,” Sept. 3-Oct. 22; “Estate Planning,” Nov. 5-Dec. 17; and “Financial Plan Writing,” Jan. 7, 2015-Feb. 25, 2015.
Instructor Grace Allen, a WCU associate professor of finance, directs the financial planning degree and certificate programs for the university. As a faculty member, she has received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and she has been the recipient of WCU’s highest teaching honor, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award, and other university-based honors. Allen currently is involved in research in the areas of financial planning and international business.
WCU’s Financial Planner certificate program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc., and courses satisfy the CFP Board’s education requirement, allowing individuals who successfully complete the program to sit for the CFP Certification Examination.
