Dear Friends,
The YWCA family grieves the loss of one of our pivotal leaders and supporters, Laurey Masterton.
The YWCA’s success today is in large part because of Laurey’s leadership on the YWCA board from1997-2003. Laurey was board president during our $4 million capital campaign and was instrumental to its success. More importantly than this financial success was her dedication to making the new YWCA a welcoming place for everyone who walked through the doors: A Beloved Community.
At a time when the YWCA struggled with visibility and financial solvency, Laurey was drawn to our mission: the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism, not the daunting number of serious problems plaguing our organization. She knew instinctively how important the YWCA and our mission were to Asheville and she became determined to do her part to support the YWCA’s renewal. Of course, Laurey was also able to see the YWCA’s grand possibility for service to the community and particularly for those frequently forgotten.
For seventeen years, Laurey shared generously with the YWCA in so many ways. Her final and most enduring gift is our urban garden for our school age children. The vision and execution were 100% Laurey. For years to come, this living legacy will reach hundreds of our children and allow them to learn and experience the magic of growing and preparing healthy fruits and vegetables. Laurey’s goodness will indeed continue long into the future at 185 S. French Broad Avenue. Thank you, Laurey.
