PRESS RELEASE:
The Wa Le Lu “Hummingbirds” team from Cherokee will demonstrate the sport of Cherokee stickball at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15 at the intramural fields on UNC Asheville’s campus. This event is free and open to the public and part of the university’s Native American Speaker and Performance Series.
Stickball, which is similar to lacrosse, is known as “the little brother of war,” and began as a way for tribes to settle disputes. There are many variations of the sport amongst Tribal Nations; the Eastern Band of Cherokee version is one of the more physical types. The stickball demonstration provides the opportunity to engage in dialogue and deconstruct and challenge popular stereotypes of American Indians.
The next event in the Native American Speaker and Performance Series will be a discussion of research protocols on the Qualla Boundary featuring Cherokee Medical and Cultural IRB (Institutional Review Board) members, from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, in the Laurel Forum.
For more information, contact Trey Adcock, UNC Asheville director of American Indian outreach and assistant professor of education, at ladcock1@unca.edu or 828.251.6961.
