BikeWalk NC to host 5th annual NC Bike Summit in Asheville

PRESS RELEASE:

Cycling experts and advocates from the southeast region will all come together in Asheville, N.C. at the 5th Annual NC Bike Summit. BikeWalk NC is proud to be working with local hosts Asheville on Bikes and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club in partnership with the NC Dept. of Transportation (NCDOT) to present this educational event to foster collaboration, educate, inform, and promote bicycling as a valid form of transportation and as an economic driver.

The 2016 NC Bike Summit will take place at the Renaissance Hotel on Sept. 16th and at UNC Asheville’s Sherrill Center on Sept. 17th. It promises to be packed full of information useful to bicycling advocates, transportation planners and engineers, business owners, elected officials, and public health practitioners. Experts from across the state and beyond will be on hand to share their knowledge and experience. State leaders will share their perspective on the importance of walkable, bicycle-friendly communities and what we need to do to get there. Thanks to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina sponsorship, our nationally recognized keynote speaker Mike Lydon will talk about tactical urbanism – how to make quick, low-cost changes. Each day will conclude with a tour of bicycle infrastructure in Asheville.

“We are so excited to be moving the summit to Asheville this year.  What a perfect location to be talking about bicycle-based tourism and the benefits of bicycling to the economy,” said Lisa Riegel, BikeWalk NC’s Executive Director. “The ability to safely walk and bike in our communities has implications far beyond transportation as evidenced by such a diverse list of sponsors and participants – from health and the environmental to the business sector.”

Mike Sule, Asheville on Bikes Executive Director notes, “Bicycling and walking advocates continue to work closely with NCDOT and the city of Asheville to improve conditions for safe and effective cycling and walking. Through their efforts Asheville has earned bronze status as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists and a Silver Level Pedestrian Friendly Designation in 2013.”

BikeWalk NC is a membership-based, statewide advocacy organization in North Carolina promoting non-motorized transportation choices. The organization’s mission is to inspire and support advocacy and educational efforts throughout North Carolina for an environment that fairly and equitably accommodates bicyclists, pedestrians, and others using human-powered active transportation.
