Environmental activist and professional racecar driver Leilani Munter will discuss environmentalism and her role in the internationally renowned documentary “Racing Extinction” on UNC Asheville on Dec. 1. The documentary discusses humanity’s plunge into Earth’s sixth mass extinction deemed the Anthropocene Event.
Oscar®-winning director Louie Psihoyos (THE COVE) assembles a team of artists and activists on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, Racing Extinction reveals stunning, never-before seen images that truly change the way we see the world.
Leilani’s visit will serve as a powerful lesson to consider our impacts on other species and the Earth as a whole, spurring both conversation and growth. As a female, professional racecar driver, vegan, and environmentalist, she comes from a place of wisdom that we can all learn from.Through attendance at the event it is hoped that students of UNCA and the Asheville community will get a better idea of 1) our Earth as an ecosystem, 2) methods for mitigation of individual impacts, and 3) ways you can get involved in environmental advocacy. The event will begin with a discussion led by Leilani, the screening of “Racing Extinction,” and culminating in an open question and answer period.
The Student Environmental Center at UNC Asheville strives to provide an opportunity for both students and members of the greater community to come together and learn through interactive events and programs. As a student-run department on campus, there is conscious effort to engage all members of the community (students, faculty, staff, and those outside of the university) for growth and development.
The event will be in the Swannanoa River Room in Highsmith Student Union on the campus of UNC Asheville from 7- 10 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1st.
