Letter writer: Kids inspired at Women’s March

Carl Mumpower, in his letter commenting on the recent Women’s March in Washington [“Women’s Marches Lack Mature Focus,” Feb. 1, Xpress], never said whether he actually was in Washington and saw it or made up his opinion based on what he saw in the media.

I was there and photographed it for The Villager newspaper in New York City. I saw signs and groups that supported everything from women’s health care to immigrant rights to “no DAPL” and almost every issue that women seem to be concerned about because of the Trump election.

I thought it was a big success and enjoyed photographing women participants of all ages. I was especially inspired by the homemade signs of children, which were beautiful and showed great intelligence. Because of the many, many female children and their signs, it gave me hope that our future will not be controlled by people like Carl Mumpower and Donald Trump.

Thanks to all who participated and organized it. … Organizers of the Women’s March just announced that they will be calling for a general strike on an as-yet-unannounced date in the near future. Might I suggest that Mr. Mumpower watch how this develops because, in my opinion, the whole country will shut down on that day.

    I fully support women’s rights and am definitely not a supporter of the Trump but I DO NOT believe in getting children involved in Adult issues. They need to be children and not be placed in the middle of adult concerns of what is going on in the world. They could also get physically hurt at some of these gatherings and any parent that would put their child in that kind of jeopardy should think twice about what they are doing. I don’t need a child speaking for me – I’m fully capable of speaking for my self and so should their parents.

    Great sign!!! It says it all…. and what’s so desperately (and deliberately) lacking from TheRump and his unkind horde. Anyway, a great job done by all the participants in the Women’s March -women, men and children of all ages. Really proud of you all. Thank you!!!

    I wonder what the little guys and gals thought about all the F… Y.. signs?
    As well as other rather nasty, inappropriate (for children) signs and symbols.
    Sure there are always “issues” for one group or another. But a peaceful and civil demonstration?
    I think not.
    Still waiting for the women (and men) in our great country to protest the absolutely horrid and cruel treatment of
    women in mostly Arab/Moslem countries. Now there is an issue awaiting sincere protest!

    Sorry, I was thinking of the Washington, D.C. march on 1/21.
    I have not seen or heard any of that type of behavior at the Asheville Women’s march.
    My mistake.

    If Republicans brought their children on protest marches they would be accused of child abuse.

    But it is OK, even encouraged, to expose little Democrats to profanity and headgear designed to resemble genitalia.

    Just wait until your little darlings become teenagers and rebel by becoming Bible-thumping capitalist/imperialist warmongers.
