Dancer and choreographer Malini Srinivasan will perform the traditional Bharatanatyam dance of her native India, accompanied by an orchestra of Carnatic musicians, in a concert titled Rhythms of Love: Dancing for Krishna, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27 in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium.
The performance will be the culmination of Srinivasan’s three-day residency Sept. 25-27 at UNC Asheville, Transcendent Arts of India: Classical Dance and Music, which will include lectures, demonstrations and master classes.
Srinivasan is a third-generation Bharatanatyam artist and the disciple of world-renowned artist C.V. Chandrasekhar. A critically acclaimed soloist, Srinivasan also performs with her company, Malini Srinivasan and Dancers, a group that bridges the gap between traditional and modern worlds. She has presented her work at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C., the La MaMa Moves! dance festival and New York International Fringe Festival in New York City, the Music Academy in Chennai, South India, the Wasserkirche in Zurich, Switzerland and many other venues around the world.
Srinivasan is an adjunct lecturer of Asian & Asian-American Studies at Stony Brook University as well as a member of the dance faculty of Chhandayan Center for Indian Music and of the New York City-based organization, City Lore.
She will be joined by an orchestra of Carnatic musicians consisting of Taniya Panda (vocal), Anjna Swaminathan (violin), Kavi Srinivasaragavan (mridangam/South Indian percussion), Kadhambari Sridhar (nattuvangam/cymbals), and Eric Fraser (bansuri/flute).
Tickets for the Sept. 27 concert, Rhythms of Love: Dancing for Krishna, at Lipinsky Auditorium are $15 general admission, available at the door or online at events.unca.edu. UNC Asheville students are admitted free; $5 for all other students and for UNC Asheville employees; $10 for UNC Asheville alumni and OLLI members.

Sept. 26 – Master Class: Gestures and Rhythms of Bharata Natyam – Free and open to everyone regardless of dance experience. Noon, Student Recreation Center Room 213A.
Sept. 26 – Master Class: Music and Social Identity – Srinivasan and accompanying Carnatic musicians will participate in discussion about life and careers in the arts. Part of UNC Asheville’s Music and Social Identity Class taught by Assistant Professor of Music Jonathan T. King, this session is free and open to everyone. 1:20 p.m., Lipinsky Hall Room 018.
