Asheville City Schools cancels, postpones April 19 events after shooting

In the aftermath of a shooting in West Asheville on the evening of April 18 that claimed the lives of two Asheville City Schools students, the school system has cancelled or postponed a number of after-school activities previously scheduled to take place on April 19. Parents were informed over voicemail, and the image below was posted to the Asheville City Schools Facebook page. Cancellations include all Asheville High School and Asheville Middle School athletic events, as well as the Isaac Dickson Elementary School talent show.

Three additional children were injured by the shooting, including two Asheville City Schools students and one Buncombe County Schools student. In an email issued on the afternoon of April 19, Buncombe County Schools noted that crisis teams and grief counselors had been deployed to all schools impacted by the event.
