Press release from the Community Housing Coalition of Madison County:
The Community Housing Coalition of Madison County has announced the launch in 2019 of a social enterprise, ReClaim Madison, whose goal is to increase capacity for its programs and engage Madison County residents around affordable housing. To that end, it will provide retail sales of hardware, salvaged building materials, operational space and community empowerment.
ReClaim Madison will be located in historic downtown Marshall, in the former Coal, Feed and Lumber Store and Warehouse, shuttered in 2017 after its longtime operator, Howard Riddle, passed away. Bringing it back to life as ReClaim Madison, the Community Housing Coalition has a three-year phased plan to grow into the space while maximizing its potential as a sustainable funding source for CHC programs.
Target opening date for ReClaim Madison is April 2019, followed by the CHC annual Spring event on May 4th to raise awareness and funds for its highly regarded community-based programs.
“This is a great project because it benefits everyone in Madison County by creating a place to recycle and purchase used materials, make community connections, and learn new skills. It will also allow CHC to expand its housing repair programs, increasing the efficiency and community engagement of that work,” said Chris Watson, Client and Grants Coordinator for CHC.
CHC has launched a fundraising campaign to attain funding to cover $165,000 required for needed improvements and overhead costs for the 9,000+ square foot space. According to Christopher Brown, Executive Director of CHC of Madison County, “ReClaim Madison stakes claim in Madison County’s Seat of downtown Marshall that our community, our culture, and our neighbors will grow and progress while bridging the history, diversity, and paths that have led us here. At ReClaim Madison, all Madison Neighbors – whether financially stable or disadvantaged, housing secure or housing insecure, multi-generationally local or newly committed and energized locals – will find the resources to bridge differences and gaps, to help reclaim our community’s strength and future together.”
