Two sidewalk projects can get under way as soon as Wednesday, Feb. 13, following Asheville City Council’s Feb. 12 resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute the construction contract.
One sidewalk project is on Hill Street on a section that was identified as an area where a sidewalk should be constructed with referendum bond money. The new Hill Street sidewalk will connect pedestrians from Courtland Avenue to Riverside Drive.
The other project, a Bingham Road sidewalk, is being built as part of the City’s Neighborhood Sidewalk Program, paid for by the City’s Capital Improvement budget. Sidewalks built as part of the Neighborhood Sidewalk Program are selected as places where there is opportunity for connectivity. In this case, the section of Bingham Road to receive a sidewalk will fill in gaps that currently exist near Pearson Bridge Road.
Both projects will enhance connectivity and pedestrian safety. Connectivity is an important consideration taken to help people get to a transit stop, to community destinations like parks, schools, libraries and even grocery stores.
