Mars Hill University’s Weizenblatt Gallery will exhibit works by Spruce Pine sculptor Remy Hanemann from Monday, February 17, 2020, through Thursday, March 5, 2020. A reception for the artist will be held Wednesday, February 19, from 6-8 pm.
Hanemann is a highly experienced and accomplished metal worker. He grew up in southern Louisiana, surrounded by the oil processing, commercial fishing, and fabrication industries. One of their by-products was scrap: cast-offs from manufacturing, junked machinery, and other items that were no longer of value to their original owners.
In his artworks, Hanemann uses these discarded and recycled metal objects. He recombines them in new ways, similar in concept to the ways that people reinvent themselves when moving from one phase of life to another. These new creations show their history in their forms, textures, colors, while their new combinations show the beauty that their histories bring to the present. Hanemann’s work is best seen slowly and rewards contemplation, both in the artworks as well as in their parallels to the viewer’s own history.
