Press release from DuPont State Recreational Forest:
In response to predicted severe weather, officials at DuPont State Recreational Forest (DSRF) have closed all single-track trails effective Wednesday, Feb. 5, at noon. Currently, a flash flood watch is in effect for the area until Thursday evening. Flood conditions are expected to linger through Friday, Feb. 7. According to the National Weather Service, the threat for heavy and/or excessive rainfall will create favorable conditions for flooding from tonight through Thursday. Rainfall totals of 5-6 inches are predicted.
Rain has already begun to fall, making soil conditions wet and soggy, which make many of the trails susceptible to damage. In addition, weather conditions may worsen over the weekend with a mix of rain, snow and sleet. Trail surfaces will be soft so that foot traffic, bicycles and equestrian users will cause erosion issues and rutting. To prevent resource damage, there will be temporary closures of all DSRF single-track trails and other affected areas. Forest roads and graveled two-track trails such as High Falls Loop, Triple Falls Trail and Hooker Falls Trail will remain open.
During your visit to DSRF, please pay attention to signage or barricades related to the trail closures. Be aware that all trails, even those that are not closed, may have debris and muddy, slick conditions so use them at your own risk.
Forest officials will monitor conditions, looking for enough improvement to open trails as soon as possible.
To report trail problems or for questions, contact the Forest at 828-877-6527, extension 200.
