Doug Edwards, former Buncombe County first assistant district attorney, filed his notice of candidacy for Buncombe County District Attorney Thursday morning with the State Board of Elections. “Buncombe County needs a D.A. with substantial experience and who is dedicated to keeping our community safe,” said Edwards. “As D.A., I will work hard to ensure fairness in the system, develop trust in the community, and treat victims with dignity and respect.”

Edwards served for over 10 years as an assistant district attorney where he prosecuted complex, high level cases including murder, firearm offenses, and vehicular homicide. He has tried cases ranging from low level misdemeanors to first degree murder. During his career, he taught law enforcement officers and prosecutors across the State in trial practice, vehicular homicide, and ethics. He has been recognized as the NC MADD Superior Court Prosecutor of the Year, in recognition of his efforts in combating impaired driving. Additionally, Edwards has a proven track record on addressing gun violence having partnered with local, state, and federal officials to reduce gun crimes in our community.

“The District Attorney’s office has experienced high staff turnover which has resulted in cases being reduced or dismissed, and serious cases not being brought to trial,” said Edwards. “I will bring strong leadership to repair relationships that are fractured, and to change the culture within the office to bring a real focus on the safety of the citizens of Buncombe County. With the support of law enforcement and community members, we can make Buncombe County a better, stronger, and safer community for all.”

A native of North Carolina, Edwards, received his B.S. at Wingate University, and earned his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. He is a Board-Certified Specialist in State Criminal Law.
