Public Works Director Greg Shuler’s retirement is set to take effect July 31, 2024. Greg Shuler joined the City of Asheville in March 2008 and has served as the Public Works Director since April 2014.
“In his ten years serving in the role as department director of Public Works, Greg consistently improved and greatly enhanced the operations of the department. We are grateful for his service to the department but also for the collaborative manner in which he worked to improve our entire organization,” said City Manager Debra Campbell.
In his 16 years with the City of Asheville, Shuler has been an invaluable resource. A few highlights of his work include:
- Led the Pack Square Park Project which included planning, permitting, and construction.
- Led the Craven Street Road Improvements Project which included: new sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic safety improvements, greenway connector, green infrastructure improvements and more. This project was in partnership with New Belgium Brewing.
- Created an Asset Management Division of Public Works that manages operational data to encourage efficient and equitable resource allocation.
- Led modernization of the City’s fleet, which included purchasing electric and hybrid vehicles where feasible.
- Implemented equitable hiring practices to ensure a diverse workforce.
- Secured funding to move forward with the development of a Solid Waste Master Plan.
“It’s been an honor to serve the community in various roles for so long. The dedicated staff in the Public Works department are truly amazing and should be lifted up. They carry out the dirty and often unrecognized work to help the City function every day and night. They have, and continue to inspire me,” said Shuler. “I appreciate the support of City leadership over the years to keep the core services appreciated for what they are. This City is fortunate to have some of the smartest, hardest working, and most dedicated staff. I will miss being able to work with them every day. ”
