School of Rock: Kontained made up of (barely) teenage players, but these kids are no strangers to rock 'n' roll, thanks in part to their training at the Asheville Rock Academy. Catch the fresh-faced quartet when it returns to the Tressa's stage for an early show on Friday, April 12. Shell Lewis
The Natural: Sarah Tucker was still in diapers when she sang for the first time, but the 18-month-old’s talent was already apparent. Now 17, Tucker is following her musical destiny with a blend of rock, jazz and old-time that’s steeped in singer-songwriter traditions. The young artist celebrates the release of her debut full length, The Windowsill Girl, with a show at the Madison County Arts Center on Saturday, March 23.
Asheville FM hosts dozens of weekly shows that run the gamut of musical styles and tastes (you name it, they've got it). But don't take our word for it: take theirs. Xpress brings you this weekly feature — direct from the DJs — highlighting a few of the station's stellar offerings. www.ashevillefm.org.
Debra LaBar, aka MamaRoux, is a New Orleans original, born and raised in the city that care forgot. Music is life in the city: christenings, funerals, crawfish boils and just plain porch sitting are all celebrated with song. A plethora of genres pours from New Orleans and Mama Roux makes sure you hear them all. Congo square, dixieland, R&B and boogie spice the gumbo as she leads a musical journey through one of the world's most beloved cities. Saturdays from 3-5 p.m.
