On Wednesday, July 30, the Asheville Area Arts Council announced its 2008 awards. The recipients are as follows:
• Artist of the Year for achievement in the field of visual, literary and performing arts: Jonas Gerard (pictured).
• Business in the Arts honors an individual or organization for a particular advocacy effort or for a sustained advocacy campaign: Charlotte Street Computers.
• Volunteer of the Year for an individual or organization whose efforts helped the community appreciate the arts: The Purple Ball Committee
• Teacher of the Year recognizes educators in Asheville and Buncombe County in visual, literary and performing arts: Cedric Nash.
• The Artist Roundtable Scholarships for graduating seniors of public or private schools in Buncombe County: Benjamin Owensby, Manon Manavit, Tiadra Simpson, Calvin Beveridge.
