AVH: Asheville Video Hits

Curious about local music, but don’t feel like leaving the house? Well, thanks to video-sharing sites like YouTube, you can check out the sounds of Asheville without having to brave the crowds, the feedback or the cover charges. And, just to get you started, we’ve profiled three recently uploaded “real” music videos by local performers. Enjoy.

The Royal We recently released a surprisingly professional-looking music video for their song “Summer.” Of course, even more surprising is that TRW is doing anything new, as the band has been more-or-less off the radar since 2004. The video isn’t too bad for a longish bit of psychedelic jam, although visually speaking there’s nothing here that you haven’t seen before. But the video’s mere existence is far more interesting. Is this a hint that The Royal We is thinking of making a return to the local music scene?

Speaking of blasts from the past, once-local singer/songwriter Nikki Talley recently posted a new, very homemade video to support her new album. Talley has been absent from the local music scene since relocating to Toronto in 2004, but a quick visit to her MySpace page reveals that she’s back in WNC and promoting her new album Telling Lies. Her video, “Mom’s Gone,” is admittedly amateur (she claims it was created on Windows Movie Maker), but the music itself seems to be more-or-less in the vein of the Nikki Talley last heard on her 2002 album Brother. Expect to hear more from Talley in coming months as she promotes her new album around the region.

While it’s not exactly new, here’s a video by Descolada side-project Serpents. Produced by Agency Films (the people who brought you the Anti-Asheville Film Festival counter festival, the Rejects Film Festival), the video for the song “Doomulus Prime” tells a story of … I don’t even know what it’s supposed to be about, actually. It’s really long, possibly anti-drug (or maybe pro-drug—it’s kind of hard to tell), has a guy being forcibly given a Christian mass and it also appears to be a dig a Scientology. Oh, and I have a sinking suspicion that it’s also supposed to be a kind of low-end music video interpretation of Candide, although I can’t back that up. Still, if you like Serpents, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Did we miss an awesome band? Of course we did, and we need your help! If you know of a music video by a local band that needs to be seen, simply paste the URL and a brief description into the comments box below.

I don’t get it Silverman. In what sense is that supposed to be “funny”? Or even entertaining? It’s just GFE driving around in the rain and goofing around in their weight room or whatever. And when did GFE become a lame jam band? I thought they were supposed to be lame rappers.

Oh, and here’s the proof …

  2. sorry you didnt enjoy it. but steve asked people to post comments about some other local bands.so thats what i did. the link is to GFE’s youtube account where they have many videos that display the bands many different styles and inflections.

i am glad that you posted that freestyle, tho. TOPR kills it. i understand how folks who dont like hip-hop music wouldnt appreciate a freestyle. most outsiders just dont get it. thats okay. im sure you like lots of other stuff thats cool. freestyle is usually reserved for other people within that particular creative circle.

i have never heard you band called “i dont like GFE” that you posted about.

do they ahave a lot of songs? do they perform locally?

and since you dont seem to know much about the band, and if your still readin this far, the clip you referred to as ‘jam’ (?) is from josh blake’s album, “seed” which was released in 1999. gfe have something like 15 albums to date. much of it may be considered ‘rap’ by people such as yourself, but since they are primarily backed bu a 5-10 peice band, many see that they are beyond any one particluar genra.

persoanaly, i think their videos are great. they even have one on their site that was made by a fan somewhere in new england. i think that skinda cool. fans making vidoes for bands they like.

    go General Funk Expidition!!!!

The Serpents are a group of right wing Christians that demand respect. They forced us to shoot and edit that video, then proceeded to baptize us in their kitchen sink.
