The buzz you heard is true: Downtown Asheville’s Broadway Video will soon be no more. The longtime bastion of obscure film and locals-only attitude is currently liquidating its VHS stock in preparation for a new incarnation on Lexington Avenue.
After 10 years on Broadway, owner Chris Yountz decided to sell the store to Orbit DVD owner Mark McCloud and Static Age Records owner Joel Hutcheson. On April 1, the duo will reopen the shop as Satellite DVD in the Lexington Ave. storefront previously occupied by Make Me. In the meantime, there are still plenty of rare, underground and plain strange VHS videos going for cheap at the old location. Look for the full story in the March 14 Xpress.

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
Assuming McCloud and Hutcheson have a shared vision for the store, this sounds like a excellent passing of the torch. Will they still have the anti-tourist stance, you think?
I wonder if they;ll waive my late fees that I have at Broadway.
My understanding is that, what with Broadway’s meticulate record keeping, late fees will NOT be waived. But that does not factor in sweet talking or bribes.
Joel and I plan on keeping the unique selection that Broadway is known for plus branching out to people living in Montford and near the college.
As far as late fees go, keep an eye on the Xpress in the very near future. Amnesty is on the way!
