Before our first-ever free-stuff issue leaves the stands, I’d like to add an addendum. Writer Steve Shanafelt noted that movies (both videos and DVDs) can be rented free at all our area branch libraries, but that you won’t find quite the selection available at places like Orbit DVD. But the libraries’ selection of music documentaries and box sets is an exception to this rule.
Watch a nascent Nirvana, circa 1987, practice in Krist Novoselic‘s basement while Novoselic’s long-suffering mom gamely looks on: This scene can be found in Nirvana: With the Lights Out, a great documentary/CD box combo available at the West Asheville branch. Also at the West branch: a rare Louvin Brothers box set and a box set, Nashville Rebel, about Waylon Jennings and fellow outlaw-countrymen. The North branch on Merrimon has an awesome Sun Records box set featuring rare, early rock-n-roll tunes. And the East branch on Tunnel Road has a box set of early Emmylou Harris. Visit www.buncombecounty.org and select the “Library” drop-down menu to search online before you make the trek.

A little self promotion, but check out our free stuff in Orbit’s music section. And please feel free to contribute to it.
