Smart Bets web extra: The Luxury Spirit

Local band The Luxury Spirit is busy at work on a sophomore full-length to be titled Forgotten Albatross. That project was fully-and-a-half funded back in January, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

For the last year or so, the lineup has been Bob Burnette on vocals and guitar; George Sweet on bass, keys and cello; Matt Aycock on percussion; and Tyler Larson on lead guitar. Together they craft a sound based in Americana-tinged indie-rock but sometimes edging more toward alt-rock and other times underscored by moody melodies shaded by the cello’s sentimental voice. The band describes its sound as “Moments of slight progressive leanings and shoe-gaze daydreaming … spacey melodic rock and major key melancholia.” In fact, the group seems to let loose and do its most innovative work in those melancholy moments, when Burnette’s capable vocal edges into its higher register and the instrumentation paints shades of natural landscapes and misty fields of emotion.

They also promise “a huge, wailing sound” live.

The Luxury Spirit takes the stage at The Lab on Thursday, June 27. The Beast of Riverdale also performs. 9:30 p.m., $5.
