And the winners could be …
The official start of summer is less than one week away. That means … well, that means a lot of things. Here at Xpress, we’re finalizing our plans for our annual Best of WNC poll, the annual celebration of all things regional, in which we invite you — the splendorous and ever-royal collective You, our readers — to vote for your favorite local businesses, restaurants, bars, bands, yoga studio, tattoo parlors and so much more.
Last year we had more votes than ever before, so we’re upping the ante with a host of changes and we want your input. Think back to the Best of WNC 2010.
Are there any categories that we missed last year? Any categories that were too broad or too specific? Please let us know what you think in the comment field. You can also use Twitter, hashtag #bestofwnc2011
A few guidelines:
Make your suggestions concise. For example: “Best cab driver.” No introductory remarks or rationale necessary.
It’s true, you are quite funny. But please keep the jokes out of the comment field. If you want to share some Best of WNC satire, use Twitter hashtag #bestofwncfunnies.
Consider the electorate. Will your suggested category get enough votes to justify its inclusion? Make sure it is not too broad or too specific.
We are reconsidering last year’s categories, refining the list to be as comprehensive as possible. Are there any categories that we should definitely keep?
The suggestion box is open.
We’ll announce the categories list — and our exciting new theme! — in our July 27 issue, along with the 2011 Bele Chere guide. Voting begins that same weekend (we’re improving that process, too.) This year could be one of the best to be the Best.
Category suggestion: “Best Nature Store”
please add a catagorie for :Local Internet Radio Station”… dedclineradio wants a Silver Medal this year!!!!!
How about “most useless poll” …..
Best Local Beer (as opposed to brewery)
Is there a place to see the categories from last year so I can refer to it. Don’t know if this is missing or not: Best Theater (live)
Best food truck?
How about “Best Weed Supplier”
TuckerdogAVL: You can view last year’s categories here: http://www.mountainx.com/bestof. Thanks!
best place for upcycling supplies
best gluten free foodies
best vegan foodies
best local foodies
best art gallery
best art exhibit

How about “Best Worst Artist in Asheville”
most passive-aggressive Ashevillian
After trying to get “best public access TV show” on the ballot for years… amybe now that URTV doors have closed we can see some support for the producers of digital media?
Best of the worst new age, lala land, self serving new-age schlock put on by local displaced street preachers whose programs were never watched on Channel 20, by anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together.
How about a “Nobody Cares About the Best of Category Unless You Still Act Like A Middle Schooler Voting in a Popularity Contest” (Like, OMG)? It’s fine for an online forum, but if you believe in it, get some help.
Thanks for your suggestions.
seriously, how about fewer catagories, seems like too many as is.
You know, Helen and i always use the ‘best of’ tally sheet to try new restaurants and events, but i wouldn’t mind if there were also many “Best New” categories to compliment the existing good restaurants and other businesses that we’ve already tried. Thus we can give credit to the people who continue to provide excellent service and to give a little shot in the arm for business trying hard to make Asheville happy while somehow profiting, too.
when do we get the results of this years (2011) best of?
