Downtown Asheville’s Goombay Festival (held Aug. 24-26) bills itself as a celebration of African and Caribbean cultures. The multiethnic street fair, held on the “The Block” where Eagle and Market streets intersect, offers an opportunity for people of all cultures to explore their roots. Diversity plays out in the colorful outfits of these festivalgoers.


• Two stylish shoppers check out African-patterned purses. Their earth-tone ensembles match the traditional garb of the booth’s merchant, center.


• Festival-friendly flip-flops and a straw cowboy hat are paired with an exotic sarong.


• Pretty in pink (and green and yellow): Three faces of fun, unique fashion.
