Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Apr. 26-May 3: Of Gods and Dylan Dog in the 5th Quarter Prom

This is one of the stranger weeks to come along. There are quite a few movies opening—none of the seem to qualify as entirely wide releases. The only art movie opening is Of Gods and Men at The Carolina. And there’s a small fact-based, faith-based uplifting sports drama, The 5th Quarter, that appears to be opening only at the Beaucatcher. Neither of these being limited to one screen is surprising. But what of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Fast Five, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, and Prom?

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Tyler Perry, Madea, and me

Having just encountered Tyler Perry’s tenth self-directed feature, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, and his eleventh big screen venture (he didn’t direct the first one), it’s incredible to realize that prior to February of 2005, I had never even heard of a Tyler Perry. That’s about the time the standee for Diary of a Mad Black Woman went up in the lobby of the theater that qualified as my day job. Just glancing at it, I was intrigued by the title and thought this might be something worth checking out. (That translates as “something I wasn’t going to fob off on another reviewer.”) I did notice that the name Tyler Perry was more prominently—and more often—featured than that of the titular director, Darren Grant, and I read up on just who this Perry fellow was.

Atlas Shrugged


The Story: In the near future, the world is in near ruins and its great thinkers and doers are disappearing, threatening to throw this over-regulated world into the abyss. The Lowdown: Cheap-jack film version of Ayn Rand's entertainingly overheated fantasy novel -- or at least part of it, since this is merely part one. If…

Scream 4


The Story: Scream survivor Sidney Prescott comes home and -- surprise -- the killings start up again. The Lowdown: Entertaining, gory, and clever return to the series that strains to be more than it manages, but worthwhile for horror fans.

Super


The Story: An everyday schlub decides to become a superhero when his wife leaves him for a drug dealer. The Lowdown: Yeah, it's occasionally clunky, but it's also a very funny and disturbing film that will stay with you long after slicker superhero movies have evaporated.

Certified Copy


The Story: A British writer and a French woman are mistaken for husband and wife and decide to play along, but are they perhaps actually married after all? The Lowdown: This charming film can best be described as a romantic comedy, but it's far removed from what that traditionally implies. See for yourself.

Win Win


The Story: An up-against-it lawyer takes on the guardianship on an elderly client in order to pocket the monthly $1,500 fee. The Lowdown: Warm, funny, winning quirky film about families -- and extended families -- that overcomes a certain predictable quality by hitting all the right notes.

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: I won’t watch, don’t ask me

Last week’s ActionFest—which was eschewed by some cineastes who don’t like “action”—and my narrow escape of having to watch Soul Surfer—which I was spared thanks to Justin Souther—give rise to the question of what people just plain, flat-out, categorically, without fear of going back on it, simply won’t watch. Since I long ago surrendered the possibility of playing the “you couldn’t pay me to watch that” card, my own feelings in the matter are largely theoretical. At the very least, my feelings are reliant on whether or not someone else can be forced or somehow cajoled into stepping into the breach. Most of the world has no such consideration. So what evokes my paraphrase of Mr. Astaire’s song about not dancing in you?

The Dreamers

The Asheville Film Society will screen The Dreamers Tuesday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in the Cinema Lounge of The Carolina Asheville and will be hosted by Xpress movie critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther. Hanke is the director of the Asheville Film Society.

Arthur


The Story: A perpetually inebriated billionaire must choose between true love and a loveless marriage that will retain his inheritance. The Lowdown: So-so remake of the 30-year-old Dudley Moore film that lacks the chemistry of the original's actors while bringing nothing new to the mix.

Hanna


The Story: A 16-year-old, highly trained assassin goes on the run from a CIA operative who wants her dead. The Lowdown: Extremely stylish art-house/thriller mash-up that's sometimes a victim of its own formal excellence and precision, but is nonetheless compelling entertainment.

The Conspirator


The Story: Historical story of the trial of Mary Surratt, a woman accused of complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The Lowdown: Strong, well-made historical drama from Robert Redford that scores big in its well-crafted and superbly acted characterizations.
