The Dark Knight


The Story: The sequel to Batman Begins finds Batman up against the Joker, an unpredictable, seemingly unstoppable madman with no desire for anything but mayhem and destruction. The Lowdown: Bleak, but often brilliant, and with the powerhouse performance of Heath Ledger at its center, the latest Batman movie is powerful filmmaking that simply goes on…

Mamma Mia!


The Story: A young bride invites the three men who had flings with her mother to her wedding in hopes of determining which is her father. The Lowdown: Your fondness -- or lack thereof -- for ABBA songs will likely determine your tolerance for this shrill film version of the hit stage musical cobbled together…

The Story: A woman is being interrogated for an unspecified crime, while sometime in the past another woman finds herself asking a stranger to pose as her fiancé. Hellboy II: The Golden Army



And This Year’s 48 Hour Film Project Winners Are …

I have once more—along with Brenda Lily and newcomer Christopher Manheim—survived another year of judging the results of the 48 Hour Film Project. I don’t want to give the impression that this is a terrible bit of drudgery. It’s a walk in the park—or at least a comfy sit in the screening room—compared to actually getting out there and making a movie from top to bottom in 48 hours.

Hancock


The Story: A foulmouthed superhero with an attitude problem gets a remake from a gung ho PR man and discovers not only his inner good guy, but also the key to his past. The Lowdown: A potentially good concept is squandered in a variety of jarring shifts of tone, dubious directorial choices and messy plotting.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl


The Story: A young girl who dreams of becoming a reporter in 1934 Cincinnati finds herself having to face up to the realities of the Great Depression. The Lowdown: A surprisingly good children's movie that raises a lot of worthy issues within its fairly simplistic confines. Entertaining, if not overly exciting, and with more going…
