State denies Mission, Pardee request for new endoscopy center
The state put the brakes on Mission Health and Pardee Hospital’s proposal to relocate an endoscopy center from Asheville to Fletcher today, Aug. 26. Mission officials say they’re committed to moving forward with the plan. But state legislators have their eye on the Asheville-based hospital. In a climate that’s seen allegations that Mission may have a monopoly in the region, state legislators today formed a new commission that will study several key aspects of issue.
Food truck vote splits Council, second vote Sept. 13
Food trucks are in — almost. At their Aug. 23 meeting today, Asheville City Council members voted 4-3 to allow the mobile kitchens in the downtown business district. The split vote means that Council must take a second vote on Sept. 13 in order to enact the ruling.

Asheville City Council approves Linamar economic incentives
At their Aug. 9 meeting, Asheville City Council members approved a $2 million economic-development incentive for Canadian manufacturer Linamar. If the company fulfills construction and job-creation targets, it will get a 90 percent waiver on city taxes for the next five years. Council voted 5-1 to approve the deal, with Council member Cecil Bothwell voting against it and Council member Esther Manheimer absent.
Deadly Biltmore Avenue fire was arson
The July 28 fire that killed Asheville Capt. Jeff Bowen was deliberately set, according to a report just released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Asheville Fire and Police departments, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. No further details are available at this time, and anyone with information about the crime should contact the AFT Arson Hotline (888-ATF-FIRE), the APD’s Crimestoppers hotline (828-255-5050) or the N.C. Funeral, procession today for fallen Asheville firefighter Jeff Bowen
Capt. Jeff Bowen’s funeral is set for 11 a.m. today, Aug. 2, at Biltmore Baptist Church, and while the community is invited to pay their respects, officials expect “significant traffic delays” and congestion during the procession to and from the church. Bowen died on Thursday, July 28, while fighting a major fire at a Biltmore Avenue medical building. The fire injured almost a dozen other firefighters and caused significant damage to the building, which may not re-open for several months. City officials report that about 25 fire vehicles will take part in the procession today, escorting Bowen’s body from the Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue to Biltmore Baptist. Traffic delays are also expected from noon to 2 p.m., when Bowen will be returned to the funeral home.
Bele Chere 5K: Tiptoo and Gilmore finish first
Before the squirt-gun crew leapt into action, Asheville’s own Meghan Gilmore was the first woman to cross the Bele Chere 5K finish line, clocking in at 18:48. A few minutes earlier, Julius Tiptoo, who trains in Durham, set a blistering pace for the men, finishing with a time of 16:01.
