Chef Brian Canipelli has been presenting a special supplemental menu to Cucina’s regular offerings lately. It’s a concept that revolves around a snout-to-tail style of cooking, wherein the chef goes, literally, whole hog (or cow or lamb, for that matter).

Do it right or go home
Troy and Sons, a legit, licensed and local moonshine distillery, is “all heart,” says Troy Ball, mother of three and white whiskey (aka moonshine) maker. With her all-American-girl looks and soft smile, there’s nothing about this former Texan that hints at liquor distiller, let alone moonshine maker.

Food truck debate: Downtown Commission passes draft ordinance
This morning marked the Downtown Commission’s final hearing on the mobile-food-vending issue. The DTC deliberated the matter for approximately six months. The meeting culminated with the DTC voting 7-2 in favor of the current proposed ordinance moving forward “as is” to the Planning and Zoning Commission. City Council still has to vote, but it may be only a matter of time before food trucks like Marni Graves’ Pink Taco Truck (above) are allowed in Asheville’s central business district. Should the city allow food trucks in Asheville’s central business district? The question has turned into a fiery debate, with fierce opinions on both sides. After nearly a year of intense discussion, food-truck vendors are still at odds with many downtown stakeholders — though it’s beginning to look like food trucks will happen downtown, it’s […]
Food truck quotables
"My passion for food plays a huge part in my life. To look at people, see the contentment in their eyes and their bellies — I want that. And this is the only way that I can give it right now. I'm not looking for wealth, I'm looking for sustainability and supporting my community and […]

Food news to go: News of the Asheville food scene in small bites
Who says that the economy is faltering? Well, lots of financial analysts and such. But to take a look at our local restaurant scene, you’d never know it.
Ready, set … grill!
Ready for a smoke-and-fire-filled Fourth? There's nothing quite like revving up the grill for what feels like the semi-official start of the high-summer season. There's something primal and utterly satisfying about cooking over open flame. Food cooked outdoors, however, does not need to be limited to burgers and dogs. Stumped about how to make a […]

Small Bites: Pho future?
As we reported last week, the building that houses the Downtown Market at 45 S. French Broad Ave. was in foreclosure. The main tenants may get a reprieve, as their owners have made statements that the bank will be working with them to keep the leases going. The consignment businesses will have to vacate by […]
Small Bites: Pink tacos and fry bread
A new food truck joins the growing fleet next month: The Roadrunner, also known as Ashevile’s Pink Taco Truck. Marni Graves, a local architect — whose credits include the former Rocket Club and some pro bono work for the North Carolina Organic Bread Flour Project — is at the helm. Graves grew up in Arizona, […]
Small Bites: Look here! It’s a Table chicken clarification
Last week, we mentioned that downtown Asheville’s Table recently introduced fried-chicken dinners with all of the fixings for $20 a head as a Sunday evening special. We were told that the wording was a little, well … unclear … and some people got the impression that Table only serves chicken on Sundays. We’d like to […]

New restaurant slated to open in old Tingles Cafe building on Tuesday, July 5
The new eatery will be opened by Derrick Todd, who moved from New Orleans late last year after closing New City Grille, which he says never recovered after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area.
The sorcerer’s apprentice
Liquid nitrogen vapor billowing around her, Katie Button looks every bit the sorcerer. Button, one of the owners and the executive chef of Cúrate, whisks the liquified gas into what will become a frozen gazpacho, ripe with summer. With a somewhat impish smile, Button splashes a little on the table in front of her, sending […]
