In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther react nonchalantly to Rob Reiner’s Flipped, show limited enthusiasm for Resident Evil: Afterlife and have mixed feelings on the Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck “documentary” I’m Still Here. They also discuss a pair of classic Universal horror flicks—Man Made Monster and Night Monster—which will be screened at this week’s Thursday Horror Picture Show, and show quite a bit of excitement about next week’s Asheville Film Society screening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. There’s also a bit of gossip about the upcoming Ricochet Film Festival, followed by speculation on the quality of upcoming releases Alpha and Omega, The Town, Easy A and Devil.

Outdoors: Goaling for it
The day before my interview with the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association for a coach position, I got hit in the face playing ultimate Frisbee. It hurt as only a flying disk can when it careens into your cheekbone at high speed, but my concern was the interview. Looking back on it, I realize that […]
Mtnhoppin
Waynesville’s Go Grocery Outlet isn’t the kind of regional business you’ll see profiled in the glossy pages of WNC Magazine. Appalachian Chic, this place is not. Tucked in a dying strip mall off Route 276, The Go is a descendant of the mid-century supermarket, a ragged intersection of fluorescent track lighting, scuffed white linoleum and […]
An apple abundance
Hopefully you’ve managed to go pickin’ this apple season. If not, now's the time — or at least time to find baskets of juicy, crisp local apples at your farmers market. What can you do with the abundance of fruit? Local chefs and bakers suggest pies, cobblers, crisps, tarts, jams, chips, cider and applesauce for […]
Buncombe schools can do better teaching our children to eat healthy
My son has just started kindergarten in the Buncombe County Schools system, and [he’s] loving it so far. I went and ate lunch with him for the first time today to meet his friends and to start to get a feel for the teachers and the general environment in his school. He brings his lunch […]
Don’t “unschool”; instead, light a fire in children’s minds
I would like to thank Hannah Layosa (“Free Range: Arrested Development,” Aug. 25 Xpress, Letters], for writing about her experiences with unschooling. Sharing our childhood experiences, both positive and negative, helps us to see “through the eyes of a child” and shape an education that best meets children's needs. It is interesting that the author […]
Ricochet bounces film back to Asheville
Local movie buffs and buff-ettes can breathe a sigh of relief: The film festival has bounced back in town with the Ricochet Film Festival. The city-sponsored Asheville Film Festival announced a hiatus this year, but friends and fellow film freaks Michael Knox and David Forbes have come to the proverbial rescue. Ricochet will launch its […]
Keever will blend mountain heritage with today’s new energies
As a relatively new member of the Western North Carolina community, but with a lifelong interest in the well-being of our country, I have endeavored to acquaint myself with the candidates running for office in the N.C. House. I am impressed with Patsy Keever. From the moment one meets Patsy, one is struck by her […]
Don’t listen to the party of “No!”
To paraphrase Harry Truman, anyone who votes Republican ought to have his (or her) head examined. Sure the country is in a mess, but think about it – it didn't happen overnight (the last two years). Coming out of the 1990s, we were on the road to fiscal responsibility. But then what happened? It was […]
I don’t want to live in the Republicans’ world
Since Obama took office, Republicans, with the help of corporate lobbyists, have made a concerted effort to destroy his administration. Their concern was not for the problems of this country and its citizens, but simply to destroy Obama so they could take this country again, even after their disastrous Bush administration that led to most […]
The Profiler
The Suspect: Krista Detor Among her many influences, this singer/songwriter lists caffeine, alcohol, good news, bad news and weather reports. Seems to work … her writing has been compared to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. Her 2006 release Mudshow received raves on both sides of the Atlantic, and it reached […]

Not so fast
Having worked on the 51 Biltmore hotel/parking garage project for four years, I was surprised by Cecil Bothwell’s recent commentary (see “Parking in a Money Pit,” Sept. 1 Xpress). I don’t believe Bothwell’s claims fairly represent it. As president of Public Interest Projects, I went to bed on Aug. 31 worrying about money, our downtown […]

Here’s a little bonus before the band plays the Grey Eagle tonight.
Rappelling 9/11 fundraiser creates fallout for GOP
Last weekend, the Buncombe County GOP threw a fundraiser on 9/11 at the Bee Tree Fire Station in Swannanoa. The event featured participants rappelling down a 90-foot tower, with donors asked to contribute $100 per rappel. In its wake, the event and an associated video used to promote it have set off a storm of criticism. This post includes a brief video interview with BCGOP chair Chad Nesbitt at the event as he was about to rappel.
Don’t forget the fair
From the midway to the petting zoo, the Mountain State Fair offers plenty of sights, sounds and smells.
Senator Hagan visits small farmers at French Broad Co-Op Farmers Market
Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) took an hour or so Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, to visit with small farmers at the French Broad Food Co-op Farmer’s Market, at least partly in an attempt to reassure them that proposed federal legislation to tighten food safety standards will not affect them detrimentally, as some first feared.

Local Matters: Standoffs and sidewalks
In this week’s edition of the Local Matters podcast, Xpress staffers Jake Frankel and David Forbes discuss the recent police standoff and the special meeting of Asheville City Council to address pedestrian safety concerns.
The reporters recorded the conversation as they huddled at the site of the standoff on Otis Street, between the federal courthouse and the RBC Bank.
Elitist Bastards: Machete Sunrise
In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther give a half-hearted nod to Going the Distance, heap significant praise on Machete, express ambivalence about The American, applaud Restrepo and appreciate Mao’s Last Dancer on its own schmaltzy terms. They also discuss the classic comedic horror film The Comedy of Terrors (this week’s Thursday Horror Picture Show), and the upcoming Asheville Film Society screening of F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise. And if that wasn’t quite enough, they also reluctantly discuss this week’s opening films Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D and The Virginity Hit.
Doolittle, do much
Is it overstatement to say that late ‘80s/early ‘90s-era outfit The Pixies invented alternative rock? The sound that Nirvana pushed into the mainstream began largely with them, and hundreds of bands owe credit. Kurt Cobain was often quoted saying The Pixies’ first full-length album Surfer Rosa was his favorite all-time record and greatest influence. The […]
Carl Sandburg’s Connemara
“It is necessary now and then for a man to go away by himself and experience loneliness; to sit on a rock in the forest and to ask of himself, ‘Who am I, and where have I been, and where am I going?’” — Carl Sandburg From Big Glassy overlook at Connemara (now the Carl […]
