3 Owen High School students essay contest winners

From press release

Three Owen High School students are winners of a peace essay contest sponsored by Veterans for Peace Chapter 099 of Western North Carolina, a local organization of military veterans and associates engaged in promoting peace.

The winning essays, on the topic of how an individual can contribute to a peaceful world, were submitted by Owen High School students Krysta Przestrzelski, Makayla Pullium, and Britnee Roland. The winners were chosen from over 40 essays submitted by students of Owen High School Social Studies teacher Tate McQueen.

The winners will read their essays at a July 26 banquet attended by over 300 people, an event of the 29th Annual National Veterans for Peace Convention being held at UNCA July 23-27, 2014. Each winner will receive an award certificate and $100.

“We were very encouraged with the response and the quality of the essays,” said Grace Shahrokh, VFP essay contest coordinator, “and we plan to make this contest an annual event. “
